Horizontal Directional Drilling

Horizontal directional drilling helps install underground utilities with less surface disruption than traditional open trenching. Northern HDD provides directional drilling for conduit, fiber, water, power, and related infrastructure projects across Idaho and the surrounding region.

This method can be useful when utilities need to cross roads, driveways, developed areas, landscaped areas, or other locations where open trenching may not be the best fit.

Directional Drilling for Underground Utility Work

Horizontal directional drilling, also called HDD, is used to place underground utilities along a planned bore path. The right approach depends on site conditions, utility locations, access points, soil conditions, and the type of infrastructure being installed.

Northern HDD works with project owners, contractors, and utility related teams to help complete underground boring work with attention to planning, access, safety, and project needs.

Common Uses

Directional drilling may be used for projects involving:

  • Conduit installation
  • Fiber and communication lines
  • Power utility work
  • Water service related projects
  • Utility crossings
  • Private service connections
  • Commercial and infrastructure projects

Why Directional Drilling Matters

A planned bore can reduce surface disruption, limit unnecessary excavation, and help protect roads, landscaping, property, and nearby infrastructure. It can also help projects move forward where trenching would be difficult, disruptive, or less practical.

Every project still needs to be reviewed based on the actual site, existing utilities, access, distance, depth, and timing requirements.

Planning a Directional Drilling Project

Before a bore is planned, the project details matter. Helpful information can include the general location, utility type, approximate distance, access points, timing needs, and whether existing utilities have already been marked or exposed.

Northern HDD can review the project details and help determine whether horizontal directional drilling is a good fit for the work.

Related Services

Directional drilling often works alongside other underground utility services. Depending on the project, vacuum excavation or utility potholing may also be useful for exposing utilities and confirming site conditions before work begins.
